Jose Antonio Arroyo
How old was Jose when he started doing drugs?
How many days did it take him to walk to Acapulco?
What is his dream for the future?
I am 17 years old. Well, I started to drug myself when I was 7. As you see, I was a very young boy, but since I didn’t know my parents, that’s what led me to follow this path after living in the streets, trying drugs, and being beaten by the police. But, aside from that, being in the streets is a very exciting thing because I lived many adventures. Once I walked to Acapulco! It took me about 4 days to get there, but I made it. There I met other street kids like me and got together to live with them, but then I got into a fight with one of them so I had to leave. They were looking for me so I came back to Mexico City.
Here I went into a shelter and then got sent to Casa Alianza. Here I found what I really wanted. Now I work and I study, too. I’m a security guard and am in the high school level as a junior.
Up until now, I have been feeling really good. I hope to be able to go through all of the phases and get to independent living so that I can be a positive member of society.
There’s a lot more to tell, but for now I will leave it here…
