Glue — Kids in Mexico Share Their Opinions

Hola! I am writing you from here at the Casa Alianza office. I want to share with you some messages from homeless youth here in Mexico and other parts of Latin America. Each person is an individual and has their own perspective. Read the messages and think about how you think we can really help these youth. Les escribo desde aqui, la oficina de Casa Alianza. Quiero compartir con Uds algunos mensajes de unos jovenes desamaparados aquí en México y otras partes de latínoamerica. Cada persona, como individual, tiene su propia perspectiva. JORGE Jorge was born in El Salvador, but lives now in a Casa Alianza group home in Guatemala City. For 10 years he lived on the streets. Glue was his best friend. "I inhaled it all the time," he remembers. "It made me feel better. I wasn’t so sad all of the time. But I’ve since learned it was killing me. Now I see that I was really dead inside. The glue actually dissolves your brain cells. Can you believe it? "It was hard to give up the glue. I had such bad stomachaches and headaches, and so many bad thoughts. The doctor told me I had to get my nose fixed. The glue had eaten away the bones. "I’m not at all like I was when I was sniffing. It’s like the world was totally apart from me. Now the world is with me. I can touch people’s lives and they touch mine. Now, I want to help others here as people have helped me. You know, when you’re in the street and you’re sniffing glue, you just don’t know what you’re doing. I want to help other street children, guide them. I want to say to them, 'Don’t take drugs, you’ve got other options.'"	JORGE Jorge nació en el El Salvador, pero ahora vive en un hogar grupal de Casa Alianza en la Ciudad de Guatemala. Durante 10 años vivió en las calles. El pegamento era su mejor amigo. "Lo inhalé todo el tiempo", recuerda. "Me hizo sentir mejor. No estaba tan triste todo el tiempo. Pero aprendí que me estaba matando. Ahora veo que realmente estaba muerto por dentro. El pegamento disuelve las neuronas del cerebro. ¿Puedes creer eso? "Fue difícil olvidar el pegamento. Tenía muchos dolores de estómago y de cabeza, y muchos pensamientos malos. El doctor me dijo que tenía que arreglarme la nariz. El pegamento me había carcomido los huesos. "No estoy igual a cuando inhalaba. Era como si el mundo estuvisera totalmente apartado de mí. Ahora el mundo está conmigo. Yo puedo tocar la vida de la gente y ellos la mía. Ahora, quiero ayudar a otros aquí así como otros me han ayudado. Usted sabe, cuando estás viviendo en las calles e inhalando pegamento, simplemente no sabes lo que estás haciendo. Quiero ayudar a otros niños de la calle, guiarlos. Quiero decirles: "No uses drogras, tienes otras opciones.""
ROBERTO Roberto is Mexican and 16 years old. He used to live on the streets but is now in a group home with Casa Alianza preparing for college. "The children themselves are part of the problem. They leave their homes because their rights weren’t respected there and they were abused, but the contradiction is that in the street they have even less rights and less people to respect them." Roberto says that altering the composition of glues will not affect drug abuse in the street. If some glue is made water-based instead (thus eliminating the chemical that the kids like to sniff) there would still be lots of chemicals they can use. Children starting at age 4 are abusing drugs already. Another way to deal with the problem could be more useful... "The governments worldwide are responsible for drug abuse in society. A minimum age limit of 30 years old should be set for people to be able to buy a substance commonly used as a drug in the streets, like shoe glue. Then the street kids couldn’t beg for the stuff. "At least try a campaign like this for 6 months: only let people over 30 buy these substances, and see what happens. Do less street kids use drugs? At the end of that trial period have a respected organization like Casa Alianza present a proposal to the government about whether there was a change."	ROBERTO Roberto es mexicano y tiene 16 anos. Antes vivía en las calles pero ahora está en un hogar de grupo con Casa Alianza preparandose para ir a la universidad. "Los propios niños son parte del problema. Ellos dejan sus casas porque sus derechos no eran respetados y ellos eran abusados. Pero la contradicción está en que en la calle ellos tienen menos derechos y menos gente que los respete." Roberto dice que cambiar la composición de los pegamentos no va a cambiar el abuso de drogas en la calle. Si se hace algún pegamento con agua (y eliminan la química que a los jovenes les gusta inhalar) aun hay bastantes químicas que pueden usar. Los niños empiezan a abusar drogas a los 4 años ya. Hay otra manera más efectiva para afectar el problema... "Los gobiernos de todo el mundo tienen la responsibilidad por el abuso de drogas en la sociedad. Se debe imponer una edad mínima de 30 años para comprar una substancia que se usa frecuentemente como droga en las calles, como el pegamento de zapatos. Así los jovenes no podrían. "Deben por lo menos intentar una campana así por 6 meses: dejar que solo los mayores de 30 años puedan comprar estas substancias, para ver que pasa. ¿Hay menos uso de drogas en los jovenes? Al final del periodo de prueba una organizacion respetada como Casa Alianza puede presentar una propuesta al gobierno sobre si hay un cambio."
MARIA Maria is 19 and used to live on the streets. "Drugs are an escape from reality when one has no family, affection, comprehension, and is rejected by society for being dirty and begging on the street. The problem is in the existence of street children themselves as a phenomenon, and not the lack of educational campaigns against drugs, for example. The question that needs to be addressed is WHY there are abandoned children fighting to survive in the street to begin with?!?"	MARÍA María tiene 19 años y antes vivía en las calles "Las drogas sirven de un escape de la realidad cuando uno no tiene familia, afección, comprehensión, y es rechazado por ser sucio y por ser mendigo. El problema está en la fenomena de la existencia de niños desamparados, y no en una falta de campañas de educación contra drogas, por ejemplo. Hay que contestar la pregunta, ¿¡¿PORQUE hay niños abandonados luchando para vivir en las calles en prímer lugar?!?"
PABLO 16 years old "One must teach oneself to move forward, create a personal image and identity, and be how one wants to be. It’s a private decision. No one else can do that for you."	PABLO 16 años "Hay que enseñarse a uno mismo seguir adelante, crear una imagen e identidad personal, y ser como uno quiere ser. Es una decisión privada. Nadie lo puede hacer para tí."
