Odyssey Maps
All six of us have been on the road, making our way to Guatemala along three different routes. Today's reports describe the journey of Abeja and Monica, accompanied by many beautiful photographs. In this first map you can see their journey by boat and bus from Palenque to La Palma to El Naranjo, to Flores and Tikal and finally, down to Guatemala City! They've gone a long way since the last update!
In this map you can see the routes we will be following:
Monica and Abeja (red line) took a river trip through the rainforest to cross the border into Guatemala and on to the old Mayan capital city of Tikal.
Klaus and Jamila (purple line) headed north so they could visit the other major Mayan cities of Uxmal and Chichen Itza. They then dropped down through Belize and crossed over to get to Tikal themselves.
Shawn and Kavitha (orange line) continued on from San Cristobal into Guatemala and on to Quetzaltenango, a primarily indigenous (Mayan descendents) city.
In this final map you can see the different areas of control that the Maya and Aztecs had. Note that not only did they have power at different times, but they controlled different areas as well.
