It was Friday, already my third night in Cajamarca. I was staying at what hads to be the friendliest place in Cajamarca, the home of Cesar and Olga. Their home is very simple, and their food pretty basic - chicken soup, beef with white rice, chicken, and fresh slices of onion, tomatoes and avocado. All of their friends were now my friends, and life was pretty wonderful. But there was one part of traditional Cajamarca life that I had not yet tried, and as dinner approached that Friday, I knew that the time had come. I would have to face it...and eat it...the CUY!

Think of all of the wonderful things you like about guinea pigs. They've got cute noses, they run around a lot, we can give them cute names, and more. Probably something you didn't mention that you like about them is their TASTE! In Cajamarca, the guinea pig is best known as a tasty food called cuy.

The family took me to a restaurant to try this traditional dish. They ordered me a soda to help me, but I still felt a little faint. When the cuy was served it was flat and looked like the kind of chicken you get at Wendy's.

The girls all crossed themselves at the dinner table before beginning to eat, as I had seen them do so often whenever they pass in front of the nearby church.

Then, just when I thought I couldn't eat the cuy, I realized that everyone else at the table was eating RABBIT! Ahhhhhhhh!!!

Well, I figured I'd rather eat a guinea pig than a rabbit. And they took a picture of me eating it so you would believe me.

Mmm, mmm, good!
