Wow...I can't believe it's actually happening! We're actually going! When I first got accepted to the Odyssey, it was the night before my finals, during my last semester in college...over two years ago. I was so excited I could barely concentrate enough to study for my finals. Here was a chance to trek around the world, visiting places I never dreamed I'd go, AND to share the experiences with classrooms back home. Little did I know then, how much more it could and would become.
Two years ago we didn't have a fancy webpage, we didn't have an office, we weren't even registered as a non-profit organization--it was just a group of people volunteering their time to create something that we all believed in. Well, a lot of those people are not involved anymore--two years is a long time, and it has been a huge uphill battle to get this vision off the ground--but every single person who has been involved along the way has helped in evolving the Odyssey to what it is today. And what it is today is far above and beyond what I could have ever dreamed two years ago. It has been so amazing to see this project grow and transform--to hear from schools all over the world who will be following along, to learn of organizations doing amazing work in local villages who are excited to work with us, to realize all the exciting possibilities available through the internet--I mean we are actually going to be able to send back photographs, sounds, and even live video!
I couldn't be more excited to be finally leaving with such interesting and inspiring people as Monica, Winter, Klaus, Jamila, and Abeja. But to be honest, as it winds down to only 5 days left before we take off--I've got to admit--I'm nervous!!! Am I really prepared to be traveling around the world for 2 years? I haven't even packed yet, or said good-bye to all my friends and family, or gotten all my immunizations, or moved out of my apartment, or practiced my Spanish, or figured out my travel route, or....AAAAAAAGGHHH!!! (any other procrastinators out there?)
Anyway, all in all, I'm overwhelmed but thrilled to still be a part of this amazing project. I am immensely looking forward to traveling in Latin America for my first time and to sharing it all with all of you. Here's to the next two years, and where our visions take us!
Jamila - Ready for the Road!
Monica - Picking up where we left off
Klaus - World Trek is Go!
Shawn - Personal Check-in...Equipment Check Later
