Michelangelo did his famous painting in the Sistine Chapel in 1483. Leonardo da Vinci painted the Mona Lisa in 1506. But the San Bushmen painted these cave drawings (see picture) over 6,000 years ago... six thousand years ago!!! Yup, I was amazed too!

So who are the San Bushmen? No, not from Star Wars. They are the descendents of the first people to live in this area of Africa. Nobody is sure about the beginnings of humans on earth, but it is widely accepted that the first people lived in Africa. Old bones show that the earliest people were four feet tall.

The first white people from Holland first called them Bushmen because they did not live in houses but rather in caves in the bush.

You don't have to be a San Bushman to feel the power of this special place. Many thousands of years of erosion have left many huge balancing rocks. It's almost like being in Bedrock with the Flintstones! But instead of Dino, there are rhinos, hippos, leopards, impalas, boars, and wildebeests (to name just a few). Unfortunately, other groups of people came and forced the San Bushmen to move, and today they live only in Botswana and Namibia. But, the spirit of the hills lives on with the san people!
